If so-called "fish to avoid/eat" lists -- commonly circulated by NGOs, green groups and retailers -- do not maintain a certain standard then consumers will lose confidence in certification schemes, said Seafish following Monday’s report on eco-labels.

This could have “potentially disastrous results both for the schemes themselves, and for the future health of our marine ecosystem,” said the group's Development Director Jon Harman.

Seafish said the recent report on information in seafood eco-labels was “highly relevant” and called on all recommendation lists to conform to United Nations criteria.
