The MSC on Monday said the U.S. Atlantic sea scallop dredge fishery, the largest in North America with 2008 landings of 24,280 metric tons, is entering assessment to be certified as a well-managed fishery, allowing product to be eligible for the blue eco-seal.
“The engagement with MSC by the American scallopers should be a real door-opener in the European market. We already have really good traction in theEuropean market -- they absolutely prefer American-caught product -- but they also demand that extra level of outside scrutiny,” Martin told IntraFish at the Boston Seafood Show.
