Although the quota for the U.S. East Coast scallop fishery -- the largest wild fishery in the world -- is the same as last year, a range of factors are contributing to rocketing prices.

The decimation of the Japanese scallop production in the tsunami is one short term factor and has driven prices up even further, said Joe Furtado, vice president with Eastern Fisheries.

“China and South Korea are the main buyers of scallops from Japan. They will look to U.S. scallops more.
