Around 10 to 15 percent of Peru’s suspended scallop production could have been affected by a strong current that hit the Peruvian coast on the night of Friday, March 11, two producers told IntraFish.
This follows news that Japan, the world’s largest scallop producer, could stand to lose 20 percent to 30 percent of this year’s production.
According to French seafood trader Direct Ocean, prices have already started to rise as a consequence.
“The tsunami also hit in South America and the Peruvian production of scallop has had some important losses,” Sebastien Roussel, co-owner and managing director of Direct Ocean, told IntraFish.
