Around 200 people are known to have become ill in the Netherlands after consuming smoked salmon infected with salmonella thompson supplied by Harderwijk-headquartered Dutch seafood processor Foppen Eel & Zalm, a number expected to go up significantly.
"This problem is just the tip of the iceberg," a spokesperson at Netherland's National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) told IntraFish.
"A lot more people are expected to be infected; but not everybody infected necessarily fall ill," he said.
Apart from the Netherlands, the products were distributed to the United States, according to the RIVM.
