AquaChile laid off 180 workers Tuesday, according to the local press, but the company would not confirm the figure.
AquaChile, which had already laid off 450 workers in April, said the new layoffs are part of an agreement reached with unions representing workers at the Puerto Montt processing plant, which was heavily damaged by fire last month.
Company sources said the layoffs were “agreed on,” and the unions “wanted a number of workers to be laid off due to the labor uncertainty as a result of the fire May 14 and the quantity of raw material currently available.”
