Buckley, a former fisherman, was concerned about improving the processing quality of Alaskan fish for years. In early 2006, he received a grant to build a net pen, used to house pink and silver salmon offshore before processing.
“It went very well,” Buckley told IntraFish. “I’d like to be able to experiment more.”
With Buckley’s grant from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, about 10,000 pounds of salmon were processed. He hopes to process more next summer, and wants to work with private businesses to subsidize the project.
