Environment Canada last week ordered a ban to the use of the pesticide deltamethrin in salmon net pens after testing found it had killed lobsters. Salmon farms still could use the pesticide – sold as AlphaMax – in enclosed well boats.

The chemical was authorized for emergency use last month to combat a problem with sea lice.

The lobsters died after being placed in an enclosed net pen shortly after AlphaMax was used, and then dragged for more than two hours through waters where the chemical had just been dispersed, Pam Parker of the Atlantic Salmon Farmers Association told IntraFish on Tuesday.
