Australian salmon producer Tassal aims to build an $11 million (€8.1 million) fish waste processing plant on the state's east coast, reported ABC News.

The facility would process up to 20,000 metric tons of fish by-products a year, producing fish protein and oil products.

Tassal says it has investigated taking over and upgrading the existing Seafish site at Triabunna but the risks, including those associated with smell, are high.

The company is in talks with Seafish about the new proposal, which could create 20 permanent jobs.
