Oslo-listed producer SalMar has been given the go-ahead to increase its smolt production at Troms Stamfiskstasjon, which it operates under SalMar Nord.
The company will extend production from 2 million smolt to 15 million smolt annually, after the Troms County Borough Council ruling.
Troms Stamfiskstasjon, was established as a smolt production plant at Jovika several decades ago.
The company currently has four full-time employees, but staff numbers are expected to increase to around 15 with the stepping up of production.
Low levels of own production smolt has long been a problem in Troms County.
