Thai shrimp processor Crystal Frozen Foods (CFF) has had a rough year: turnover plummeted by around 50 percent and it had to significantly downsize production and dismiss about half of its staff as the Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) crisis revealed its full impact.

The company -- one of the processing partners of trading firm Siam Canadian -- is now putting all its focus on value-added production, moving away from its commodity-driven origins.

"EMS affected us a lot; we had to downsize our production to 60 percent of our capacity," Pornchat Achakulwisut, managing director at CFF, told IntraFish during a visit to the company's processing plant in A.
