Sainsbury’s wants to ensure the science behind the increase is in line with its sourcing policies after Iceland’s Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Einar Gudfinnsson cited the country’s state of economic crisis as the primary reason for the 30,000-metric-ton cod quota increase.
“Sainsbury’s is working closely with our supply base and independent fisheries experts to obtain the supporting scientific advice which allows for the increase in Icelandic cod quota,” a Sainsbury’s spokesman told IntraFish. “We will make a decision on the status of the fishery against our wild caught purchasing decision tree once we have fully assessed all information relevant to the increase.”
