As part of its five-year plan to improve sustainability at Safeway, FishWise will first conduct a detailed assessment of Safeway’s seafood sourcing, flagging for attentions areas where the chain is not offering sustainably caught fish and shellfish, or seafood that has other negative environmental impacts.
“We then will develop improvement plans to address those concerns, while also investigating viable alternatives,” Tobias Aguirre, executive director of California-based Fish Wise, told IntraFish on Tuesday.
“That’s what we’re planning. We both hope to accomplish our goals sooner, but some of the key commodities have some real challenges and it will definitely take some time to move them forward.
