The outlook for the South African offshore hake fishery is good: Finally branded as a well-managed, sustainable fishery, the total allowable catch (TAC) for 2014 is expected to exceed this year's quota of 156,000 metric tons.

The exact figure won't be confirmed before December this year, but it would be "very surprising" if the fishery saw a reduction, industry members told IntraFish.

"All the signs are the quota is going up next year," Tim Reddell, operations director at Viking Fishing, said. "We wouldn't be able to say anything negative about it because we're MSC [Marine Stewardship Council]-certified."
