The Russian Union of Fishermen of the North (UFN), which entered into the assessment process for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification in March, says it expects a preliminary decision on its certification by November, and a full certification decision by next spring.
If the certification is successful, over 114,000 tons of Atlantic cod and over 50,000 tons of Atlantic haddock will be eligible to bear the MSC eco-label.
UFN includes 57 companies, of which 49 are engaged in fishing. They operate 90 vessels for deep-water fishing, nine small boats to operating in the coastal fishery and 11 transport vessels, according to Rybatskaya.
