The government of Russia's Kaliningrad region announced an ambitious plan to almost triple production of canned sprat.
The project is based on developing the region's on-shore fish processing infrastructure and significantly increasing sprat harvests.
“By the end of this year we are planning to start running four new canning plants in addition to three operating ones," Andrey Mikhalevich, a head of the regional fishery agency told IntraFish.
“It will allow us to increase canned sprat production by nearly three times from the current 25 million to 70 million cans annually."
