Ilya Shestakov, head of Rosrybolovstvo, the Russian federal agency for fisheries, is confident the country's sector is able to replace banned fish imports from the European Union (EU), the United States, Canada and Norway with domestic supplies.

"Our fishermen are able to supply high-quality fish to the domestic market," he told media during a press conference on Aug. 19 in Moscow.

According to Rosrybolovstvo statistics, Russia harvested 4.3 million metric tons of fish and seafood in 2013, of which 1.8 million metric tons were exported.
