The boss of Russian Far East fishing firm BAMR-Roliz Petr Savchuk -- who has been central in bringing the industry together to apply for MSC certification -- challenged statements from the American pollock industry that the timescale of the Russian assessment was too long. Russia, which applied in 2008, has said it could take four years to reach the standard.
At an April meeting between the Pacific Research Fisheries Center (TINRO), the Pollock Association and TAVEL Certification, the body carrying out the assessment, it was determined that certification would be finished by 2011, Savchuk told IntraFish.
