The results of a freedom of information request from T. Buck Suzuki Foundation show no traces of infectious salmon anemia (ISA) virus, which has decimated salmon farms in Chile, or any other exotic diseases.
The low number of mortalities are caused by natural, locally occurring illnesses that impact the salmon when they are put in net pens, said Mary Ellen Walling of the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association, who says the government report verifies what the industry has been saying.
"B.C. salmon farmers are committed to increased transparency when it comes to information about the industry's operations," Walling said.
