NGO Oceana is estimating the sale IUU (illegal, unreportedand unregulated) seafood represents as much as $10 billion (€7.6 billion) to$23 billion (€17.5 billion) in global losses each year.

The group based its estimate of global fish piracy on a comparison of records of fish catches by country as reported to the United Nations to seafood sales in various world markets. Click here to read the report.

The report said illegal trade could account for 11 million to 25 million metric tons of seafood, a minimum of 20 percent of seafood worldwide.
