The outbreak of early mortality syndrome (EMS) in the Far East has brought an end to a decade-long boom in the shrimp aquaculture industry, resulting in the largest ever contraction in supply and subsequent record prices.

However it is not all doom and gloom, according to analysts at Dutch bank Rabobank, and the crisis is also an opportunity for “second tier” regions to step up production and fill the void left behind in the market.

EMS is primarily affecting the world’s three largest shrimp producing nations – China, Thailand and Vietnam, but other shrimp producing countries such as India, Ecuador and Indonesia could benefit from the situation, says Rabobank.
