The majority of stocks of commercially fished tuna species have poor conservation status, according to a recent report by the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP).

None of the 22 tuna stocks assessed in the study managed to achieve category A status -- which means very well managed -- with half the stock falling into Category B (adequately managed) and the remaining eleven stocks in category C (poorly managed).

The 11 tuna stocks marked as adequately managed included Atlantic bigeye tuna, Eastern Atlantic skipjack tuna, Eastern Pacific skipjack tuna, Indian Ocean skipjack tuna, Western and Central Pacific skipjack tuna, Atlantic yellowfin tuna, Eastern Pacific yellowfin tuna, Western and Central Pacific yellowfin tuna, North Pacific albacore, South Atlantic albacore and South Pacific albacore.
