The project, located near the town of Chiapas, is in its second year of development. After a preparation phase and environmental and social impact studies, the farm is now capable of producing of 5,000 metric tons annually.
During 2009 and early 2010, the focus will be on supplying the local Mexico market with fresh tilapia, the company said.
An onsite factory is planned for completion in 2010, which is will permit Regal to supply the U.S.and European markets with both fresh and frozen products.
