Buyers told IntraFish the Vietnamese industry must prove it can produce a quality product to tackle the more demanding western market and improve rock-bottom prices.
"There has been a lot of negative views about pangasius in the recent half year or even year. Sometimes people talk about antibiotics, sometimes about the food values, all kinds of negative things," said Jan Kaptjn, managing director of Netherlands-based Seafood Connection. Norway-based Aker Seafoods is yet to delve into processing pangasius, and its executive vice president of sales and marketing, Morten Jensen, told IntraFish a percieved lack of quality is still a major barrier to the company entering the market.
