Thailand's shrimp farmers have perhaps been hit hardest by the Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) crisis, which has caused turmoil in the global shrimp market over the past few years.

Once the vannamei stronghold, Thailand hit a record production of 610,000 metric tons in 2010. This dropped to about 500,000-450,000 metric tons in the following years. Last year, was the so far lowest point for the country's shrimp farming industry, when production levels plummeted 60 percent to 250,000 metric tons.

Farmers are still battling the disease.
