She is the first of three vessels for the La Reunion-based Sapmer intended to supply its own factory in Mauritius with whole-frozen tuna stored at -40 degrees centigrade, reports IntraFish sister publication Fishing News International.

Instead of the traditional method of storing tuna in brine wells at around -20 degrees centigrade for delivery to canneries, Sapmer’s strategy uses a combination of new and existing technology.

“Yellowfin tuna is a magnificent fish and Sapmer wanted to develop its activity in a new way, focusing on value, not quantity,” said the company’s fleet manager Jean-Pierre Peguy.
