In 2008, Spanish households consumed a total of 1.25 million metric tons of fish and seafood products, with a value in excess of €8.9 billion ($13.2 billion).

ASEMA said fish is found in 70 percent of Spanish households year-round, with an average of 1.2 kilos eaten per person per month.

The Spanish Ministry of the Natural, Rural and Marine Environment (MARM) said fish, both fresh and frozen, represents 56 percent of fishing industry volume, compared to 29.6 percent for seafood -- fresh, frozen and cooked -- and 14 percent for fish preserves.
