Silver smelt is now a main target for the Tavan factory at the Faroese port of Leirvik.

The company expects to process 10,000 metric tons of silver smelt during the six-month summer season, said Marnar Pattinson, Tavan’s processing manager.

The factory has been working two shifts to keep it running 20 hours a day over a six-day week.

Tavan’s silver smelt is filleted and minced before being frozen into cartons. The frozen mince is exported mostly to Norway, with some sales to Sweden.
