The Philippines Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has suspended imports of all live shrimp and disease-susceptible crustaceans indefinitely. 

In a statement, BFAR said this is to prevent early mortality syndrome (EMS) and other shrimp diseases from entering and spreading in the Philippines. 

BFAR draws its action from a recommendation by shrimp disease expert Donald Lightner. Likewise, the shrimp operators themselves expressed concern over the risk of entry of infected shrimps from heavily-affected countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, China and Indonesia.
