The plant, which will be officially opened June 21 by company President Manuel Fernandez Sousa and Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates, will be able to produce 7,000 metric tons of turbot a year in its first phase, but has a capacity of 10,000 metric tons.

Turbot from the plant will be ready for the market by 2010. This level of production will equal the total capacity of all the plants in Galicia, Spain, the company said.

“Not only will this plant be the world’s largest, but it will also be the best,” said Socrates.
