An official with Promarisco, one of Ecuador's largest shrimp exporters, confirmed to IntraFish on Tuesday that Pescanova acquired Promarisco, but declined to offer details on the exact date or terms of the agreement.

The official said the deal closed "recently," and "in 2008."

Guayaquil-based Promarisco has developed a reputation as one of the top suppliers of raw and value-added vannamei in South America; the company's shrimp make their way to several major U.S. seafood buyers, including Darden Restaurants.

Vigo, Spain-based Pescanova is reportedly in discussions with several other shrimp farming companies in South and Central America, part of a drive to secure raw material and shellfish processing capacity that began in 2006 with French shrimp firm Krustanord, and continued last year with the acquisition of Florida-based shrimp supplier Ladex.
