The current was an effect from the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan’s eastern region of Tohoku that day.
The extent of the damages is not fully clear, as the current appears to have affected Peruvian farms to different degrees. One producer, Cultimarine, told IntraFish that it had not sustained any damages.
However, two other producers, Sea Protein and Sea Corp, said that the strong current did damage their farms, and in particular their suspended production.
According to them, Peruvian companies have reported overall losses of 10 percent to 15 percent to their suspended production due to the current.
