And, in a weird way, having dealt with the mess after Hurricane Katrina ruined the Louisiana seafood industry for two years, Smith says that experience is helping the seafood sector cope with the even-worse nightmare of the Gulf oil spill.

“Following Katrina, one thing we learned is -- fortunately and unfortunately – we have experience with crisis situations, and that prepared us well to deal with this,” Smith told IntraFish.

“At the same time we recognize the incredible challenges ahead. With that said, there’s always a silver lining – and we’ve learned that we will generally come out stronger on the other side.”
