There is still great uncertainty over what the impact of the pelagic discards ban will be, especially on under 10-meter vessels.
This was highlighted by Jerry Percy of New Under Ten Fishermen's Association (NUTFA) at a recent meeting of the UK industry body Seafish's discards action group (DAG).
Although the ban was considered less of a problem in the pelagic than the whitefish sector, there were still “plenty of unknowns” and the timescale was “onerous,” he said.
The obligation to land all pelagic quota species comes into force on Jan.
