There is something inherently wrong with a system which sees the return fishermen get for their catches plummet, while at the same time the price consumers pay for the same fish continue to increase.

In the same week that IntraFish publication Fishing News (Mar. 28 issue) proudly shows new and positive elements in the industry with several fishing vessel builds and deliveries, it’s sad to also report of the crushingly poor prices fishermen have received for their catches in recent weeks which is literally putting their entire businesses at risk.

What makes this slump in fish prices harder to swallow is that the entire British Isles was hammered by storms for much of January and February -- leaving fishing vessels unable to go out and therefore unable to meet consumer demand.

The plight of fishermen is hitting the small boat fisheries in particular, as reported earlier this week by IntraFish.
