Grimsby Member of Parliament (MP) Austin Mitchell said conservation groups "are demanding the close-down of the commercial fishing industry, or restrictions on it that are so great that it will be impossible for it to carry on."
Speaking Thursday in the annual commons fisheries debate held ahead of the December Fisheries Council, Mitchell said the political imperative in EU fisheries management now is to appease the conservation lobby, “which is playing far too big a part in policy decisions, as opposed to the interests and concerns of commercial fishing and having a viable fishing industry."
