Despite confusion over its name, and tariffs imposed on exports to the United States, pangasius quickly is growing in popularity around the world, with some in the industry calling it "the next tilapia."
Pangasius -- also called basa, swai, sutchi, or Vietnamese catfish -- is a whitefish with a mild taste that's farmed primarily in the even-temperature waters of the Vietnam's Mekong River Delta.
Typically sold as a boneless, skinless fillet, the fish is moderately priced and easy to cook.
"It's a very versatile whitefish," said Jim Bugbee, who runs the pangasius supply company QVD USA with his wife Laurie.
