Belgium-based Hottlet Frozen Foods believes excellent growth in the pangasius market risks stalling as price wars threaten to undermine product quality.

“The biggest threat [to pangasius] is an over focus on price,” Filip Van der Vennet, sales and office manager at Hottlet Frozen Foods, said at the Value Added Seafood conference last week in London. “Huge price competition tends to lead to an overuse of additives and glazing. It also tends to lead to inferior processing levels on the market.

“Product quality decreases, and at the end there will be reduced consumer satisfaction, which will reduce the viability of the pangasius business.
