The Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association (PCSGA) at the 2007 Seafood Summit on Monday announced a new “certified sustainable” program, which should be finalized later this year. It’s the first certification labeling program for shellfish in the U.S., said PCSGA Executive Director Robin Downey.
“This is very much a grass-roots program,” Downey told IntraFish. “The growers just really want to tell consumers the product is sustainable.”
To be labeled eco-friendly, the shellfish must be from a farm that has instituted a PCSGA-approved Individual Farm Plan, showing that the shellfish was grown, harvested, processed and transported in a sustainable manner.
