The Pacific bluefin tuna population remains decimated at 4 percent of historic levels as a direct result of “rampant overfishing”, according to the latest assessment from the International Scientific Committee for tuna and tuna-like species in the North Pacific Ocean, or ISC.
The latest report found the catch rates of the youngest bluefin are extremely high, greater than 90 percent of the total catch.
The highest catch by number is of fish less than one year old, said the report. These fish are being caught before they have an opportunity to reproduce, which further diminishes future populations, it added.
