Japan's salmonid imports dropped 25 percent over the last decade as competition increases with markets such as the United States, the EU, and eastern Europe.

Salmon supply in 2014 -- including domestic production, imports and carry-over inventory from the previous year -- was estimated to be at around 523,600 metric tons, which is down 10 percent from the previous year.

The main reasons for the drop are poor harvesting in the Hokkaido prefecture and lower coho imports from Chile.

Excluding exports and carried-over inventory, Japan consumed a total of 352,000 metric tons, compared to 412,000 metric tons in 2013.
