Years ago, the Ecuadorian shrimp company Biocentinela began working to get its organic certification. After two years of work, which ended in the year 2002, Naturland, a German company, awarded Biocentinela its definitive certification.
Javier Barragán, general manager of Biocentinela, told IntraFish that they are currently producing around 300 tonnes a year. In 2003, production totalled 620,000 pounds, and this year they have produced 310,000 pounds so far. Therefore, they expect to finish the year with an average of 700,000 pounds harvested.
