IntraFish caught up with Guo in the Great Hall of the People during a break at the joint Norwegian-Chinese seminar on food safety held last week in Beijing.

"In 1993 there were no Chinese that knew anything about salmon," Guo said. In 2004, 6,000 tons of salmon and trout were imported by China and, if you add on the export of salmon to Hong Kong, often a gateway to China, total salmon exports to the region totaled 14,000 tons.

“In the run-up to Olympics there will be significant growth in the numbers of visitors to China, which will boost consumption," Guo said.
