Ocean Choice International’s plans to purchase a CAD 10 million (€7.7 million/$9.9 million) vessel and invest CAD 1.5 million (€1.2 million/$1.5 million) in its Fortune groundfish plant hinge on a decision by Canada’s Newfoundland government Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The Canadian fishing and processing company, known as OCI, hopes to ship whole redfish and flatfish overseas, which is currently illegal in the province without an exemption.

OCI’s temporary exemption on the law expired Dec. 31 2011, and on Jan. 6, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture issued a denial of OCI’s request for a permanent exemption, a decision the minister is now reconsidering as it makes a final decision on the request.
