"There's nothing dramatic about Japanese salmon imports being reduced by between 14 and 15 percent," Hans-Petter Naes, NSEC's Tokyo delegate, told IntraFish.

The drop would almost be expected in the face of the price developments for Atlantic salmon in 2006, Naes said.

"The Japanese market differentiates considerably from other markets, in that it is more price-sensitive," he says.

Flip flopper

While Atlantic salmon completely dominates the European market, many kinds of salmon have entry to the Japanese market. That means Japanese salmon buyers can – and often do – replace order for Atlantic salmon with cheaper wild-caught salmon, coho or sockeye if the Atlantic salmon's price shoots up.
