No time table has been given for the eco-label's development.
Along with Iceland, Norway has been notoriously reluctant to accept the MSC or other environmental certifications. It has long argued that its fisheries are already managed sustainably, and do not require outside interference or the added cost of certifcation.
Over the past year, many in the Norwegian industry have softened their tone towards the MSC, and a number of fisheries are currently undergoing MSC assessment. Norway's saithe fishery is slated to be MSC accredited this month.
