Iceland for the past few yearshas had this market to itself, as capelin fishing was banned in Norway.
Norwegian producers have already announced they intend to limit production of capelin roe to 20,000 metric tons to avoid flooding the Japanese market with this high-value product.
The Icelandic fleet has had a 15,000-metric-ton research quota to fish, and the outlook for a capelin season in Icelandic waters is fading. The research quota has been taken and much of this has gone roe production.
