The Norwegian Fisheries Directorate estimated Tuesday in an annual report Russian trawlers exceeded their 2005 cod quota by nearly 50 percent and haddock quotas by 70 percent.

Commenting on the report, Greenpeace put the value of the excess catch at about NOK 2 billion ($312 million, €250 million).

"This is not just a threat against the fish in the Barents Sea, but also against those who harvest them legally," Greenpeace said.

Norway and Russia share the waters of the Arctic Barents Sea, often grudgingly, including a vast disputed bordered zone.
