The Norwegians want an 85 percent share of any northern contingent of the mackerel quota, which the Faroese see as an unacceptably high demand, reported Intrafish sister publication Fishing News International.
Norway denied fishing vessels from the Faroe Islands access to its waters, aside from ships catching herring.
Hanus Hansen, managing director of Faroe Islands-based trawler company JFK, said he hopes a solution can be reached shortly, hopefully next week.
The issue arose at a meeting over reciprocal fishing rights at which mackerel was reportedly not even on the agenda.
