The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Wednesday refuted claims that American lobster could harm European lobster if shipped into the European Union.

Earlier this year, the Swedish government urged the European Union to consider American lobster (homarus americanus) on its list of invasive species, saying that there was a high risk of the species reproducing and overpowering the native European lobster (homarus gammarus) in EU waters.

NOAA Fisheries Seafood Inspection Program Deputy Director Steven Wilson said on a conference call the administration, along with US and Canadian scientists, "spent some time to do the best risk assessment we could" on the matter and does not find the Swedish claims to be accurate.
